  • Delay in Diagnosing Childhood Strokes

Research funded by the Stroke Association which was recently published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry* found that diagnosis of an Arterial Ischemic Stroke (AIS) in children is delayed at every stage of the pathway. Most profoundly however this occurs when the first imaging that is used is CT scanning, which is non-diagnostic. The research strongly advised that MRI should be the initial imaging of choice in any suspected case of childhood AIS.
