Cauda Equina Compensation

What is Cauda Equina Syndrome?

The Cauda Equina are the collection of spinal nerves and nerve roots at the base of our spinal cord. Cauda Equina Syndrome occurs when these nerves are severely compressed, usually by way of a large lower lumbar disc herniation (slipped disc), prolapse or sequestration. It is these nerves that innervate sensation and mobility in the lower limbs and pelvic organs.

This is a rare but serious condition and it requires urgent surgical treatment.

What are the symptoms?

There are several symptoms which are red flags for this condition, however at times they are missed by medical practitioners. Symptoms vary and can either appear quickly or come on slowly over a period of weeks or months. These include:

  • Pain, numbness or weakness in one or both legs or in the lower extremities;
  • Lower back pain;
  • Loss of or altered sensations in the legs or saddle region;
  • Bowel and/or bladder incontinence; and
  • Sexual dysfunction.

What happens if treatment is not administered early enough?

If treatment isn’t provided immediately, this runs the risk of permanent paralysis and incontinence. The longer the delay, the higher the risks will be. The timeframe is very narrow and normally treatment is required within 4 to 6 hours, in order to prevent permanent disability.

This condition requires emergency hospital admission and emergency lumbar decompression surgery in order to relieve the pressure that has built up at the base of the spine.

When can I make a claim?

Cauda Equina Syndrome is a serious condition which, when left untreated for a period of time, can lead to devastating life changes. There are numerous symptoms of this condition, but unfortunately these are sometimes missed. If this happens then there will be a delay in the surgical treatment provided, at which point injuries are likely to occur. The compensation values for such a claim are usually very high due to the life changing injuries that are sustained from negligent treatment of this condition.

If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation, then you may have a claim for medical negligence compensation.
